The History of Yatiyantota Divisional Secretariat

The Yatiyantota Divisional Secretariat, located in the Kegalle District of Sri Lanka, evolved from an ancient administrative post in the Kingdom of Sitawaka into a modern local government institution.

Sitawaka Kingdom Era
16th Century

During the reign of King Rajasinha I of Sitawaka, the region was governed under local chieftains, notably controlled by the local leader Meedeniya Adigar (Adikaram). The region formed part of the historical divisions of Dehigampal Korale and Patha Bulathgama.

British Colonial Division
1944

Under British rule, administrative boundaries were restructured. The area comprising Dehigampal Korale and Patha Bulathgama was formally subdivided into 11 administrative divisions.

Post-Independence Administrative Expansion
Mid-to-Late 20th Century

The traditional Gammuladeni (village headman) positions were replaced by formal Grama Niladhari (GN) roles. The administrative body transitioned into a Divisional Revenue Office (DRO), expanding the original 11 divisions into 50 Grama Niladhari Divisions to handle growing local populations.

Establishment of Divisional Secretariat System
1992

Under national decentralization reforms, the administrative structure shifted from the traditional Kachcheri system. The Assistant Government Agent (AGA) role was redefined as the Divisional Secretary, officially converting the local sub-secretariat into the Yatiyantota Divisional Secretariat.

Modern Reorganization
2000

The administrative boundaries of the Yatiyantota Divisional Secretariat were re-demarcated into 32 Grama Niladhari Divisions to streamline local governance and public services.
